2019 National Cherry Festival
If you live in or around Traverse City, you know the truth - the National Cherry Festival is a ton of fun and is a fantastic civic festival with deep roots and a wide variety of ways to get involved. It begins on June 29 this year, and with the Thunderbirds in town and some great concerts already booked, Traverse City is bound to be overflowing. This wonderful civic event is also pretty unique in that many of the events are presented at the Open Space right on West Grand Traverse Bay, where travel and traffic can get pretty bottled up at times. When the concert venue is filling up, it can be a standstill for a while, with car parking used up for many blocks. All the more reason to enjoy the Festival by bike!
It's the perfect solution - ride your bike, have fun on the TART Trail getting there, and ride right up to the action! Thanks to our friends at TART, we have a trail system that makes it easy and fun to get downtown with no hassles - on fact, the trail goes right past Brick Wheels, and we're just 3/4 miles from the action. You are even welcome to park out back of Brick Wheels where you can easily park your car, and ride a safe, non-motorized trail right to downtown and all the activities. From Brick Wheels, for example, it’s just 1/2 a mile to West Bay and 3/4 miles to all the fun of the Cherry Festival. With plenty of restaurants, shops, and breweries, downtown Traverse City can be a great time for the whole family. We have TART maps at Brick Wheels or visit www.traversetrails.org for more information.
Once you arrive, we highly suggest using the Bike Valet that is staffed by our friends at Norte! It makes your Cherry Festival experience hassle-free, supports youth cycling and bike access throughout town. Their volunteers allow our cyclists to park like Rock Stars for going GREEN! It’s simple - open from 10 AM - 10 PM, they’ll park and watch your bike for free! You’ll sign-in, and get a card indicating your parking spot. If you’ll be out late, don't worry, you can lock after 10 PM, but they will be unattended. Toss ‘em a tip, and 50% goes to Norte! supporting their youth cycling initiatives, and 50% to the young volunteers that day. It’s a great way to have a hassle-free and safe Festival experience. You can visit https://elgruponorte.org/ to volunteer or ask questions.
If you have friends in town who need bikes, Brick Wheels has a large fleet of rentals, with everything from kids bikes and trailers to tandems, cruisers, and even high-end road bikes. Helmets, baskets, and locks are free, and you’re welcome to park out back for the evening. Stop by www.brickwheels.com or call 231-947-4274 for details. Make the Cherry Festival fun again by riding your bike and supporting these fine organizations who have done so much for cycling in Traverse City
