Iceman Cometh Challenge

The Bell's Iceman Cometh Challenge is the largest point-to-point one-day mountain bike race in North America and it happens right here in Traverse City, Michigan! Since 1990, the Iceman has challenged mountain bikers of all skill levels to tackle a unique mix of singletrack, two-track and gravel roads between the start in Kalkaska and the finish at Timber Ridge.

Sponsored by Bell's Brewing and Trek, the Iceman is always held on the first Saturday in November as long as the first Saturday in November isn't the first.

Over the past three decades, racers have faced more than a foot of snow and days over 70 degrees, plus everything in between. Most editions of the race are in the low 40s with a mix of rain and sun.

Registering to Race

The Iceman always sells out quickly, usually within a few weeks of registration opening in March. Racers from the previous edition of the race get first dibs, then registration is open to the public.

Once the race is full, organizers have a transfer in/transfer out option. This typically closes by the first weekend in October.

The Bell's Ice Cycle Expo

Race weekend kicks off with the Ice Cycles Expo at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa the Friday before the race. In addition to packet pick-up, racers can check out dozens of vendors, including Brick Wheels and Trek! We also bring plenty of overstock items and great deals, so make sure you swing by our booth.

The Expo is held the Friday before race day from 11am until 10pm.

The Iceman Cometh Challenge Course

The course changes a bit every year to keep riders on their toes. It's always a good idea to put in a recon ride or two before race day and you'll see hundreds of riders in the woods in the weeks leading up to the race riding Out'n'Backs, or riding "Out" to Kalkaska on Sand Lakes Road and "Back" on the Iceman course itself.

You can download the 2022 Iceman course file and watch a video preview.
